Sony Ericsson Open - Day 2 Thoughts
Here are a couple of quick thoughts from Day 2…
- A mixed bag for the Americans on both side today:
- Last week’s news-maker, Mardy Fish, couldn’t hold up to the pressure as he lost to Arnaud Clement in straight sets. Check out Andy Murray’s comments on Arnaud Clement.
- Bobby Reynolds came up with a big win over Marat Safin, beating him 7-6 in the third set. Good win for Reynolds, but the bigger story is the continued fall of Safin.
- Excellent win for Ryan Sweeting, the former University of Florida Gator. He defeated Filippo Volandri 6-3, 6-2.
- Even though 2007 Eddie Herr champion Melanie Oudin lost, she played very well. She was taking on veteran Tathiana Garbin. Oudin did win the second set 6-2, but she didn’t have enough in the third losing it 6-1. Good showing for the very young American.
- Nice to see Mario Ancic back in the winner’s circle. The guy has been devastated by injuries, but he is certainly capable of beating anyone on the tour. He could be a wild card in this event, but has a tough second round match against Andy Murray (should be a fun one to watch).
- The heat was definitely taking its toll on the players today. Much more so than yesterday. Let’s see what kind of impact it has on the rest of the tourney.
- Did anyone see Kuznetsova and Mauresmo play doubles together? They beat Perebiynis/Radwanska 10-6 in the second. That is an interesting pair, and something to keep your eye on.
- Great article from Sandra Harwitt on ESPN.com about Israel’s tennis players. We hear at Nick’s Picks have always been big fans of Shahar Peer because of her discipline and dedication to the game!
- The ATP and WTA both announced their award winners, congrats to all who won!
- Lastly, we are all looking forward to tomorrow when the seeded players come out of their hiding places an onto the tennis court!
