Sony Ericsson Open – Day 3 Thoughts

Here are some interesting thoughts/stories from the tennis world on Day 3 of the Sony Ericsson Open:

  • How about defending champion Novak Djokovic falling to South Aftrican qualifier Kevin Anderson in the second round today? Not only did he lose, but he was also warned by umpire for the ridiclous amounts of time he bounces the ball before serving. After he was penalized he lost all but one of the next 14 points! Coming in, he had won the title at Indian Wells last week, and had to be one of the favorites coming in. Read more about it here.
  • Djokovic wasn’t the only high seeded player to lose, #8 Richard Gasquet lost as well. He was beaten by resident ATP jester Dmitry Turusnov 7-6 in the third set. Turusnov has beaten Gasquet twice this season in three tries. Another disappointing result for the uber-talented Frenchman.
  • Good wins for Americans James Blake, Serena Williams, and especially Ashley Harkleroad (upset Razzano). Not a good day for Sam Querrey, who was crushed by Tomas Berdych 6-1, 6-2.
  • Kudos go out to Caroline Wozniacki for her win against #9 Marion Bartoli. Wozniacki, who is only 17, seems to have a knack for upsets.
  • Check out this interesting article by Ravi Ubha (one of my favorite tennis writers) about Blake, Mauresmo, Henin, Ljubicic and their coaches.
  • My good friend Peter Bodo blogs about the difficulties of winning Indian Wells and Miami in back-t0-back weeks. Djokovic can attest to that already.
  • Tomorrow should be a good day of tennis. Academy alum Sabine Lisicki and Nicole Vaidisova will both take the court (Court 4 to be exact) to play their second round matches.
  • We had an Anna Kournikova siting today. She was one of Nick’s former students, and the two are still close. Click the link to see the picture!
