Williams showdown not to be

Heading into Tuesday there was a good possibility that we could get the coveted All-Williams match in the semifinals of the Sony Ericsson Open. Serena opened the day with a thorough beating of Justine Henin 6-2, 6-0. Serena moved exceptionally well and was able to get to all of Justine’s drop shots. This was a big key in the match and it allowed Serena to control the court from the first point.

For Justine, that was definitely a disappointing showing.  She has demonstrated in the past her ability to beat Serena (considering she did it three tims in 2007), but this was one of the worst losses she has had in some time. When Serena, and Venus for that matter, want to play and are healthy they are the best athletes on the WTA Tour.

Speaking of Venus, after little sis Serena had won her match, she only needed to beat Svetlana Kuznetsova to set up the semifinal sibling showdown. This proved to be a little more difficult then she would have liked. Kuznetsova had nine fewer errors than Venus, and converted on 3 of 5 break chances to win the match 6-4, 6-4. That was the big difference in this match. Venus had six break opportunities and only capitalized onc, other than that the match was fairly even. Big win for Svet Kuz, as she will now face Serena (whom she is 1-3 against) in the semis.
