Could this be Jankovic’s breakthrough?
Jelena Jankovic has never been to the finals of a Grand Slam. I know, I know this isn’t a Grand Slam, but a title in Miami is as close as it gets. Jankovic has won two career Tier I tourneys (Rome and Charleston), and if she could add this trophy it would go a long way for the former NBTA student. Jankovic has cemented herself as one of the top women on the WTA Tour, but has yet to get to the next stage. Of her top five counterparts, three have won Grand Slams (Henin, Kuznetsova, and Sharapova) and Ivanovic has been to the finals twice. I definitely think Jankovic is talented enough to win a Grand Slam, and she is certainly fit enough.
Winning here is not going to be easy though. First she needs to get by Vera Zvonareva whom she is 2-2 against. Then, if she wins that she would face either Serena Williams (3-2 against her) or Svetlana Kuznetsova (2-3 against her), not an easy task. But, and it’s a good sized but, if she could win this tournament it would go a long way for her confidence and her career.
