Men’s Singles - Semifinals

Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. Tomas Berdych (CZE)

It seems as though Nadal has taken a liking to playing and beating James Blake in the quarterfinals of Masters Series events. Last week at Indian Wells Nadal beat Blake in three sets, and he needed three more sets to defeat the American in the quarters in Miami. With a win here, Nadal will reach the finals for the second time in four years.

It is time for Berdych to step up and get a big win on the ATP Tour. He is no longer a newcomer looking to find his way; he is a veteran that needs to show his opponents that he can win on the grandest of stages. His semifinal showing here is his best result of the year, and a trip to the finals would be even better.

Match-Up:

Nadal and Berdych have faced six times previously, with each player winning three of those matches. Of the six times they have faced, three have been on hard court and Berdych has won all of those matches. Berdych has had absolutely zero success against Top-10 players in Grand Slam events. Now, I know this isn’t a Grand Slam but it is pretty much the fifth major!

To get a victory here, Berdych is going to have to be playing his best game. He can slug from the baseline with anyone, and his serve is darn good. To beat Nadal though, you have to be in tip-top shape and ready to run. Nadal is going to hit heavy top-spin balls to each side and this can definitely wear a player down. The longer this match goes the more it favors the grinding style of Nadal.

  1. berdych 3 sets

  2. Berdych has had success against nadal in the past, and it wouldn’t surprise me to see him win. Tough call in this match.
