Serena/Maria showdown set
After much speculation (from us), Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams will meet in the quarterfinals of the Family Circle Cup in Charleston. Williams survived a three-set scare from Katarina Srebotnik, winning 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to advance. Meanwhile, Sharapova rather routinely dispensed of Tatiana Perebiynis 7-5, 6-2. Now, the two biggest stars on the WTA Tour will meet.
For starters, each girl has won one of the two biggest tournaments so far this year. Sharapova in Australia, and Williams in Miami. Sharapova comes in with a 24-1 record and three titles already this year, while Williams has a 16-1 record with two titles. Williams leads the all-time series 4-2, but like we mentioned before they have never met on clay.
If Williams is serving and moving well, the edge goes to her. If she is making mistakes and the forehand is off-the-mark, Sharapova will pounce. There is no doubt that Sharapova can hit with Williams, but it’s Serena’s movement that can make the difference. This is going to be a tight match. Who do you think will win?

I know I wouldn’t want to be one of the balls in the match that is for sure. Although Maria is playing lights out she hasn’t faced the ferocity and level of play she is sure to face today. If both bodies hold up I give Serena the advantage in what I think will be a dog fight of a quarterfinal.
Sharapova, who’s been much more consistent this year.
