Americans get big win on Monday

After getting it’s first French Open Men’s Singles victory since 2006, America got another one this morning. Wild card entrant, Wayne Odesnik upset #29 Guillermo Canas in three tiebreak sets. Odesnik will now play Hyung-Taik Lee in the second round. This is a big win for Odesnik and for America, because Canas is an excellent clay-courter and is capable of beating the best in the world.

Two other American men were in action this morning, and one is still on the court (when I wrote this). Sam Querrey, who had been playing well on clay, drew Roger Federer in the first round, and I think you can guess how that match ended. Federer won 6-4, 6-4, 6-3. Tough break for Querrey, because I think if he would have drawn somebody not named Federer or Nadal he would have had a good shot at winning. I guess it pays to be seeded.

The other young American playing this morning is John Isner. The former University of Georgia star has won the first two sets over Juan Ignacio Chela 6-2 and 6-3. This would be another big time win for America, because Chela is a good clay-court player. If Isner holds on, that would give the USA three first-round victories already. That’s much better than the o-fer we put up last year. Vamos John!!
