French Open 2008 – Live from Paris!!

Nick’s Picks is now coming to you from live Paris! We got here yesterday (sorry I’ve not been able to update the blog much), and we couldn’t be more excited about the tournament! Let’s pick up with today’s action.

The big story today is Serena Williams loss to Katarina Srebtonik in the third round. We picked Serena to win this match, and picked her to win the tournament so this came as a shock to us. I guess you can never be to sure of anything when it comes to sports. What this does is opens up the draw dramatically. The first two players that this helps are Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic, because they are both on her side of the draw. Next, it helps Maria Sharapova and Svetlana Kuznetsova because they could have both played her in the finals. Also, don’t forget about Dinara Safina and Venus Williams because they are both capable of winning this as well. Keep in mind, the longer Sharapova hangs around the more comfortable she will get on the clay. This will only her chances of winning.

On the men’s side, the big three are all still around and they are all playing well. One player that has caught my attention is Paul-Henri Mathieu. The Frenchman spent time with me at the Academy as a boy, and is now working with Mats Wilander. I think this is a perfect match. Wilander has the right personality to help Mathieu. He gives him plenty of support and nourishment that Mathieu needs, and understands how he plays very well. Wilander also is very excited to be working with Mathieu, and it just goes to show what a difference a coach can make.

Speaking of Frenchman, what about the play of Jeremy Chardy?? This guy came from two sets down to beat David Nalbandian on clay. What a win!! He is tall, athletic, and moves well. You know if he keeps on winning the French fans are going to be looking for big things from this young man.

That’s it for now, check back more for later. Also, don’t forget to check Tennis Week for more French Open coverage!

  1. Any thoughts on Gonzalez/Wawrinka on Saturday. I’m leaning toward Gonzalez in a mild upset. Thanks.
