Larcher de Brito wins, will face Serena next
Michelle Larcher de Brito won her first round match today against Gisela Dulko 7-5, 7-6(1) at Stanford. The 15-year old Larcher de Brito came into the tournament ranked #226 in the world and had to qualify just to get in. After accomplishing that, she beat the world’s 34th ranked player today in Dulko. After winning the first set 7-5, Larcher de Brito went down an early break in the second set but battled back to get it into a tiebreaker. In the breaker it was all Michelle.
Larcher de Brito is playing in only her fifth career WTA main draw, and her first since she played Estoril in April. This was Michelle’s fourth win in four consecutive days without dropping a set. It was also her second top 100 and second top 40 win of her young career. She will now get a chance to face the #5 ranked player in the world in Serena Williams on the stadium court tonight. This will be a great experience for Michelle, and I know she will go out there and compete as hard as she can. Good luck to Michelle!
