Larcher de Brito goes three sets with Serena

The night couldn’t have gotten off to any better of a start for the 15-year old Michelle Larcher de Brito. She won the opening set at Stanford against eight-time Grand Slam champion and top seed Serena Williams 6-4, and then went up 2-0 in the second set. Suddenly everyone was thinking that Larcher de Brito, who trains at the NBTA, could pull off the upset. It wasn’t to be though, as Serena Williams showed why she is a great champion. She leveled the second set at three all, and then went on to win it 6-3. Serena then took the third set 6-2, to win the match 4-6, 6-3, 6-2.

Despite the loss, this is a very encouraging sign for Larcher de Brito. She played great and pushed one of the best players in the world to three sets on a hard court. “I started off really well; I slowed down a little bit, but overall I was playing well the whole match,” Larcher de Brito said. “Obviously she played such a great game. She’s Serena Williams. I didn’t have anything to lose and I gave it my all.“I was getting close to an upset, but now I have a lot of things to work on, and a lot of years ahead of me.”

“I never underestimate anyone, especially when they play me, because they’ll always bring out their best game,” Williams said. “In a way it was surprising, but you’ve just got to deal with it. I had a plan and I started playing better, and it’s encouraging for me to bounce back after losing the first set.”

“I think if she plays the way she did against me, she’ll be a great player,” Williams said.

Serena will face the winner between Alisa Kleybanova and Patty Schnyder in the third round.

  4. yeah, i hope my comment the other day didn’t come across as too disrespectful…because you’re the tennis guru and I think that you’re amazing…i mean, it’s one thing when a coach coaches one person to victory and fame because credit for the accomplishment could be due to either the vast talent of the player with minimal guidance from a coach or the vast talent of the coach guiding an apt pupil. For example, the Williams sisters could have probably made it to world class status in many sports under the tutelage of a potato. (I’m still waiting to see how Carlos Rodriguez does with Anna Chakvetadze…) But you (along with Pilic, Macci, and Landsdorp) are consistently able to spot and develop talented youngsters and turn them into Grand Slam champions (or at least Top20 individuals). That’s no small feat and I think that it is a true testament to your (the coach’s) talent.

    Have a good day Nick!

  8. [...] this no doubt says something about the lovely and talented, and did I mention hot Larcher de Brito, I think maybe it says more about Serena Williams. At 26 Serena is certainly not an old player, but [...]
