Haas, Larcher de Brito pick up wins

Tommy Haas got off the court a bit earlier than I am sure he imagined he would today, as he won when Gael Monfils retired in the first set. Haas was winning the first set 5-1 when Monfils had to stop. Haas will now face either Rafael Nadal or Florent Serra in the third round. The way Nadal is playing, I would say that there is a pretty darn good chance that he will be Haas’ opponent. Nadal is 2-0 against Haas, with one of those wins coming back at Cincy in 2006.

The women are in Montreal, and it is there that we find 15-year old NBTA student Michelle Larcher de Brito. After picking up a three-set win over Vania King in the opener, she notched a top-20 victory (second this year) today over Flavia Pennetta. Larcher de Brito won 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 and will now face fourth-seeded Svetlana Kuznetsova in the third round. Don’t forget, Pennetta is coming off of a finals appearance last week in LA and was playing excellent tennis.

  1. Poor flavoursome Flavia. It looks like this Larcher de Brito is going to be a major threat to a lot of players over the next few years. It’s hard to believe that she’s still only 15.

  2. Michelle is just unbelievable. If she didn’t look so young I would say she looks like a veteran playing. But two main things to improve. The service and the regularity.
Fantastic Michelle, Svetlana will have tough game!

  3. Just to leave this note from home:
    Portugal loves you, Michelle.
Must be the water we have here……..

  4. Wohoo!!!!!!!Go Michelle! Thats unbelivable. Keep going!
