Larcher de Brito comes close to upset
Michelle Larcher de Brito came very close today to picking up the biggest win of her very young career at the Rogers Cup in Montreal. She lost to the fourth-ranked player in the world, Svetlana Kuznetsova, 5-7, 6-2, 4-6. Larcher de Brito was up 5-3 in the first set and serving for the set when Kuznetsova broke her to get back on serve. Then, at 5-4, Michelle had a set point on Kuznetsova’s serve but she couldn’t capitalize. As a 15-year old, some nerves are to be expected.
After dropping the opening set, Michelle bounced back to take the second set 6-2. Then in the third, Kuznetsova got an early break and held on to win the match. Looking at the stats, one just jumps off the page. Kuznetsova had 21 break points, but only was able to convert on six of them. Michelle had 13 break chances and converted on seven on them. That is far too many break chances for both players, especially Michelle.
No loss feels good, but this was an impressive one for Larcher de Brito. To be playing a girl ranked inside the top five in a Tier I tournament, and to push her to the limits is extremely difficult. Add on to that the fact that you are only 15 years old and it is just crazy! Michelle is playing really well right now, and hopefully this is a sign of good things to come. Great match Michelle, we are all really proud of you!!
