Will we have two new #1′s on Monday?
The winds of change are blowing on the tennis scene, and we could have two new #1 ranked players on Monday morning. On the men’s side, no one has had a better year than Rafa Nadal. He came into this week’s tournament in Cincinnati with a 61-7 record, having won seven titles, and he hasn’t lost a match since early May. Simply put, he is playing Federer-esque tennis. With Federer’s loss yesterday to Karlovic, Nadal can take over the top spot for the first time in his career by winning in Cincy. I don’t think you will find many people who will argue that Nadal doesn’t deserve to be ranked #1. Winning five Grand Slams by the age of 22 should get you there.
On the women’s side, Jelena Jankovic can become the newest #1 if she reaches the finals in Montreal. This is a result of Ana Ivanovic losing her third round match to 17-year old Tamira Paszek in three sets. Jankovic will face Dominika Cibulkova in the quarterfinals, a player she is 1-0 against in her career. She beat her earlier this year at the French Open. If she wins that match she will face either Marion Bartoli or Ai Sugiyama in the quarters. If Jankovic reaches the finals and becomes #1, she will be the 10th player that has been coached by Nick to achieve that feat!!
