Murray wins first Masters Series title
For the first time in his career, Andy Murray won a Masters Series event. Murray beat Novak Djokovic 7-6(4), 7-6(5) in the finals at Cincinnati to claim the trophy. With the win, Murray moved up three spots in the rankings to a new career high of #6 in the world. It was also the third title he has won in 2008, but his first since February.
This has been a long time coming for Murray. “It’s huge to win your first sort of major tournament, and to do it in a match like today makes it more special,” Murray said. “I put in a lot of work off the court to be able to win these sorts of tournaments, and it makes it all worthwhile.” We will have to see if this translates into bigger results at the US Open later this month.
In other news from Cincy, Ivo Karlovic used his run to the semis to jump four spots in the rankings to a new career high of #18 in the world.
