Gasquet ousts Nishikori in Japan
Playing in front of your home crowd can be exhilariting, and it can also be pressure-packed. This is especially true if you are only 18-years old and experiencing celebrity status like never before. All that seemed to catch up with Kei today as he fell to Richard Gasquet 6-1, 6-2. Gasquet, last year’s finalist, got out to a 5-0 lead in the first set and broke Kei two more times in the second set to get the win. Gasquet also had seven aces and eight break chances, whil Nishikori didn’t have one of either. Gasquet will face Rainer Schuettler in the next round.
Tough loss for Kei, but he will bounce back and I am sure he will be ready for his next tournament.
Other winners on the men’s side included: #1 David Ferrer, #2 Andy Roddick, #3 Fernando Gonzalez, #5 Juan Martin Del Potro, and #9 Tomas Berdych. Seventh-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga was upset.
On the women’s side, #1 Caroline Wozniacki won, #2 Anabel Medina-Garrigues was upset, and #8 Aleksandra Wozniack won.
