Lisicki moves into top 50
Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy student Sabine Lisicki reached her first career WTA final over the weekend at the Tashkent Open, but she couldn’t seal the deal. That didn’t prevent her from moving into the top 50 in the rankings for the first time. Lisicki upset the top seed, Shuai Peng, in the semis 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 but couldn’t defeat third-seeded Sorana Cirstea in the finals. Lisicki won the first set 6-2 in just 25 minutes, before dropping the second set 6-4. She then had leads of 3-1 and 4-2 in the third set and even had a match point at 5-4. She didn’t close it out, and went on to lose the third set 7-6(4).
The loset won’t deter Lisicki though. It is the best result of her young career, and she is now ranked #50 in the world. Congrats to Sabine for a great week in Uzbekistan and good luck in the future!
