Ivanovic claims title; JJ locked in at #1
It’s been a long time since we have seen Ana Ivanovic holding a trophy. The former world #1 has been mired in a deep slump since winning the French Open back in June, but she found the winner’s circle this weekend at the Tier II tournament in Linz. Ivanovic beat Flavia Pennetta, Aggie Radwanska, and Vera Zvonareva in successive rounds to win the title. Entering this tournament Ivanovic had been 5-6 since the French Open, but she did reach the semis at Zurich the week before Linz.
This is definitely a good sign for Ivanovic as she is one of the brightest stars on the WTA Tour, and they need her to be very good all the time. When she plays at her best, there aren’t many that are better. If she continues to play well, Ivanovic will be a real threat to win the year-ending championships in Doha.
In other news, Ivanovic’s fellow Serbian star, Jelena Jankovic, has clinched the #1 ranking for 2008. She has won four titles this year, including three in a row in Beijing, Stuttgart and Moscow. Jankovic is one of five players who have held the #1 spot this year joining Justine Henin, Ivanovic, Maria Sharapova, and Serena Williams.
Congratulations to NBTA alumn Jelena Jankovic!!
