Venus wins Sony Ericsson Championships
This has not been an easy year to predict on the WTA Tour. From Henin’s retirement, to the myriad of top ranked players, to the emergence of Dinara Safina, and the list could go on and on this has been a very unpredictable year. Well, could you have predicted that the last two players to qualify for the Sony Ericsson Championships would be the ones playing for the title? I certainly didn’t.
American Venus Williams defeated Vera Zvonareva 6-7(5), 6-0, 6-2 in the finals of the Sony Ericsson Championships in Doha to capture her third title of 2008. Both players went 3-0 in the group round robin play, and both won tight semifinal matches. It was Venus though that had just a little too much though for the Russian. With the win, Venus becomes only the third player to win Wimbledon and the Championships in the last 10 years. The others were Lindsay Davenport in 1999 and Maria Sharapova in 2004.
Congratulations to Venus on winning the title and congrats to Vera on reaching the finals!
