It has been one heck of a year for 15-year old Michelle Larcher de Brito. The young Portuguese star is the youngest player ranked in the top 200, as she checks in a #125. She ended 2007 at #296 and has worked her way up the charts. What’s even more remarkable is that Michelle achieved this ranking having just played 10 women’s events.

Her biggest wins this year came against Aggie Radwanska at Miami, Gisela Dulko at Stanford (she also took a set of Serena there), Vania King and Flavia Pennetta at Los Angeles, and she reached the quarterfinals at Tashkent.

According to our friends over at WTA Backspin Michelle leads the pack of next generation tennis stars. Here are their rankings:

#125 Michelle Larcher de Brito, POR
#127 Urszula Radwanska, POL
#140 Jessica Moore, AUS
#165 Alexa Glatch, USA
#177 Melanie Oudin, USA
#188 Arantxa Rus, NED
#203 Lauren Albanese, USA
#225 Madison Brengle, USA
#294 Zhou Yi-Miao, CHN
#350 Tamaryn Hendler, BEL
#352 Simona Halep, ROU
#354 Lenka Jurikova, SVK
#384 Noppawan Lertcheewakarn, THA
#402 Asia Muhammad, USA
#404 Gabriela Paz, VEN
#405 Coco Vandeweghe, USA
#431 Chelsey Gullickson, USA
#443 Kristie Haerim Ahn, USA
#559 Laura Robson, GBR

Congrats to Michelle on a great year, and we are all looking forward to what you can do in 2009!

  1. I think that also Polona Hercog (year 1991, ranked 243) belongs to the NextGen players. One of the best juniors, came through quallies into few WTA tournaments this year. Remember this name. And there are also others young players ranked around 200, that are not mentioned (who are much better than some overrated Americans up there), like Petra Martic, Stephanie Vogt, not to mention Russian girl Pavlyuchenkova, who is younger than some of mentioned and ranked 45.

  2. She should stop shrieking. It’s worse than Sharapova’s.

  3. She may shriek, but she wins too!!

  4. Let’s see if this is yet another junior player to just fade away once they go deeper into pro tour.

  6. 15 is so young, she must be an amazing talent. I’ll look forward to seeing her progress further next year.

  7. While we’re on the subject of promising juniors, I’d like to mention Romana Tabakov√°, Nadia Lalami, Elena Bogdan and Anna Orlik.

  8. Why does anyone care if she grunts?????
Its part of tennis – get over it!!!!
Girls hitting the ball hard are going to grunt.
I love it. Michelle – grunt away and keep winning girl!!
