Michelle Larcher de Brito qualified for her first Grand Slam today!

Sixteen-year old Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy student reached a milestone today by qualifying for her first Grand Slam Main Draw at the 2009 French Open. This was Michelle’s first time playing in the professional event at Roland Garros after reaching the quarterfinals of the Junior event in 2007 at the age of 14. Michelle clinched her spot amongst the top in the world by defeating Ekaterina Ivanova of Russia 0-6, 6-4, 6-4, her third consecutive three-set battle in qualifying. Not only is this the first main draw for Michelle, she is now the first Portuguese woman to play in the main draw of any Grand Slam! She won’t know who she plays until a bit later today, but congratulations to her and good luck in the first round!
