Michelle Larcher de Brito won her second round match at the 2009 French Open

Sixteen-year old Michelle Larcher de Brito got the biggest win of her young career today at the French Open. The Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy student beat the #15 ranked player in the world, Jie Zheng, 6-4, 6-3 in the second round. Larcher de Brito, who had to go through qualifying just to get into the tournament, has now won two matches in her first career main draw Grand Slam appearance. The win is also the third top-20 win of her career, with the other coming against Flavia Pennetta (Montreal 2008) and Agnieszka Radwanska (Miami 2008).

Larcher de Brito dictated play with her excellent groundstrokes and broked Zheng seven times en route to the win. She will now face Frenchwoman Aravane Rezai in the third round.

  1. Congratulations Michelle!! Keep up!!

  2. If screaming when the opponent is preparing to hit the return ball is fair???? Ok – then she will go far with the unfair sportmanship. It would be good if she could beat the opponent without gamemanship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Brito has no class.

    • I would say that the grunting is part of the game. Her grunting has no relationship with her level of class. She plays extremely hard every point and gives it her all every time she goes out on the court. Forget the grunting and focus on her actual game!

  3. Brad states 15 years old – she’s actually 16 years old!!!

  4. most annoying female player of all times. can’t stand her grunts at all. it’s just pathetic and the audience won’t fancy that.

    • While the grunting may be annoying to listen to, her game is outstanding. She has shown time and time again at a young age that she is capable of beating anyone. The future is very bright for Michelle and we are thrilled about her success!
