Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy student, Michelle Larcher de Brito, who is only 16 years old, lost today in the third round of the 2009 French Open. The young Portuguese star was making her first career main draw appearance in a Grand Slam and it was a very successful debut. After qualifying for the tournament by winning three matches, she then went on to win her opener against Melanie South and followed that up with a top-20 victory over Jie Zheng. The run ended today though as Larcher de Brito lost to Frenchwoman Arvane Rezai 7-6(3), 6-2.

Larcher de Brito is the first Portuguese woman to ever reach the third round of a Grand Slam and is currently the youngest player ranked in the top 140. With her performance at Roland Garros there is a good chance she will move into the top 100 when the new rankings come out in a couple of weeks.

Congratulations to Michelle on a fantastic tournament and good luck throughout the rest of 2009!

  1. Michelle fizeste historia e Portugal está orgolhoso de ti. Desejo-t tudo de bom. Mais cedo do que tu pensas serás uma grande campeã.
You made history and Portugal is very proud of that:) I wish all the best for you. Nearly then you thing you will be an grand slam champion. you have no doubt about that.
    Good luck for Wimbledon:)

  2. She is a big talent, but her on court atitude is disastrous. I pretty much agree with this article –

    • Grunting is part of the game and many players on both the men’s and women’s tours grunt. Michelle is louder than many others, but it is natural for her. Let’s focus on her game, which is fantastic, and not on the grunting!

  3. It is not only about grunting, personally I don’t mind it at all. Trashing her racquet, pumping her fist, when her opponent makes a double fault, bitching at the umpire… A 16 years old girl should be taught about the manners first, it will be harder every year to make her understand that.

  4. It was a magical run in RG but you forgot to mention her wins in Estoril Open and Madrid. She won three rounds in the qualifying in Estoril and lost in the first round of the md to Peer 64 06 06. In Madrid she passed one round in the qualie but lost against Gronefeld. What a great clay court year for Michelle. Good luck in grass!
