IMG Bollettieri student up for prestigious UK award
IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy student Heather Watson
Fresh off a U.S. Open junior girls singles title in September, 17-year-old IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy student Heather Watson became the next “big thing” for the English tennis scene.
Now, Watson will battle two other British juniors for the BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year Award. Previous winners include Andy Murray (the only other British tennis player to win a U.S. Open juniors title), Premier League star Wayne Rooney and many others.
Watson’s up against diver Tom Daley, who won the award in 2007, and sprinter Jodie Williams. The winner will be announced Dec. 13.
Watson, originally from the island of Guernsey, has trained at the Academy for five-plus years.
