2011 Australian Open – Nick’s Picks – Men’s Singles Finals
Andy Murray (GBR) vs. Novak Djokovic (SRB)
Murray fought off a valiant challenge from David Ferrer to reach the finals of the Aussie Open for the second consecutive year. This is Murray’s third Grand Slam final, and it will be the first time he doesn’t have to face Federer. This is as good of a chance Murray is ever going to have to win a Grand Slam, and I am sure that he understands that. Could this finally be the “one” for Murray or will Djokovic make him wait.
Speaking of Djokovic, he has now beaten Federer in the semis of the last two Grand Slam tournaments and many people are talking about a possible changing of the guard. I don’t think we are quite there yet, but we are definitely inching closer. Djokovic is playing some of the best tennis I have ever seen from him and is brimming with confidence. He is a joy to watch and there is so much that tennis players all over the world can learn by watching him.
Djokovic is 4-3 against Murray, but the two haven’t met since the finals of Miami in 2009. Much has changed for both men since then and both are playing great tennis. When you look at these two, they are very similar. They have practiced a ton with each other over the off-season and there will be no surprises. Djokovic has the advantage when you compare power on the forehand and backhand side, although Murray will play with more variety from both wings. Djokovic has the advantage on the serve, but Murray has it on the return of serve. I would also give Murray the edge on movement.
Both players know, the longer this match goes the more it favors Murray. If there are long sets and it goes the distance than the edge goes to Murray. If Djokovic can get it done in three sets or a short four, the edge goes to him. I am really looking forward to this match and I cannot wait to see what happens.
What do you think is going to happen?
Nick’s Pick – Djokovic in 3 or a short 4, Murray in a long 4 or 5 sets
