2011 French Open – Nick’s Picks – Men’s Singles Round 4
Roger Federer (SUI) vs. Stan Wawrinka (SUI)
Federer is 8-1 against Wawrinka and has already beaten him twice this year. They met in the fourth round here last year and Federer won in straight sets. Coming into this match, these men have had opposite routes. Wawrinka played a long match against Tsonga and dropped the first two sets before coming back and winning in five and Federer has yet to drop a set. Both men have one-handed backhands, but Federer will slice it more and that should help in this match. Both men have great groundstrokes and excellent serves, but Federer can play with more variety and also tends to make fewer unforced errors on the big points.
Federer has had great success against Wawrinka in the past, but he cannot rely on that to win this match. He needs to keep focused on the task at hand and take care of business. I look for Federer to win and it could go four sets if Wawrinka can crush winners like he usually does.
Nick’s Pick – Federer in 4 sets
Albert Montanes (ESP) vs. Fabio Fognini (ITA)
This is an unexpected fourth-rounder, but it is also intriguing. Both men are very good on the dirt and neither is talked about very much. Montanes is 3-1 against Fognini, and has already beaten him twice on clay in 2011. They will know each other’s games very well so there will not be any surprises out there. Fognini is playing in the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time and this is Montanes’ second appearance at this stage.
Both men move well, but I feel Montanes is a bit more solid once the ball is in play. I like his groundstrokes, especially on the clay, and I think since he has been to this stage before the pressure won’t get to him as much. Right now, I just like Montanes’ game a little more than Fognini’s so I have to give him the edge.
Nick’s Pick – Montanes in 4 sets
