Nick’s Picks- Day four at the US Open
Serena Williams VS. Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez
Martinez Sanchez is left handed and does not have a lot of pace. She is 30 years old and her age is starting to catch up with her, but she has the experience and she will fight for every point.
What can be said about Serena Williams, She plays the game in only a few ways- with her power serve, excellent movement and always playing offensively.
Nick’s Pick – Serena wins
Agnieszka Radwanska VS. Carla Suarez Navarro
Radwanska has had a fantastic year, winning in Dubai and is seeded #2. Her serve is still tentative, especially her second serve. She makes up for it in her excellent footwork and the her excellent feel for the ball.
Suarez Navarro is right handed with an excellent one handed backhand with very good slice. She is a baseliner with good movement but an average serve.
Nick’s Pick- Radwanska will force Navarro to move and make errors. She cannot beat Radwanksa.
Mardy Fish Vs. Nikolay Davydenko
Mardy is one heck of a competitor and is not that easy to beat. He has a very steady backhand that is hit very deep and can also be hit down the line. He has a very good serve, and at times he will serve and volley. Mardy is very comfortable at the net. His return of serve is one of the best.
Nikolay is not that easy to beat either. He does not miss plus he is almost invisible to see on his side of the court. He will not overpower you but he forces you to panic and overhit.
Nick’s Pick- There will be very long rallies and in the long run it will not be good for Mardy. I still think his all around game will give him the win.
Roger Federer VS. Bjorn Phau
Roger’s movement could not be better. He reminds me of a ball room dancer. His one handed backhand has become much more offensive. He has the best of the best slices and one of the best forehands in the history of the game. I could write and write but still not be able to say enough about him. He also has one of the most outstanding coaches, Paul Annacone.
I will be brief with Bjorn. He stands very close to the baseline, with excellent ground strokes. He moves well and his serve does not miss. For the most part he will force his opponent to overhit.
Nick’s Pick- Roger will do all sorts of things including change ups, drop shots etc. Roger has too much of everything, but do not take Bjorn lightly.
