The 2012 Australian Open got off to a great start with a host of really good first round matches. No big upsets on the men’s side, but on the women’s side 2011 US Open champion, Sam Stosur did fall. Playing in front of her home fans has always been difficult for Stosur and it showed. Here are my picks for some of the more interesting second round match-ups:

Men

Lleyton Hewitt (AUS) vs. Andy Roddick (USA) – Their will be no surprises between these two veterans in this match. Hewitt had to give everything and more to win his first rounder and now he has to turn around and face a difficult opponent in Roddick in the second round. Roddick showed a bit of zip in his first round win over Robin Haase and will definitely have an advantage on the serve against Hewitt. Roddick needs to move Hewitt side-to-side and keep the points short to beat the Australian and I have to give him the edge. Roddick in 4 or 5 sets.

Gael Monfils (FRA) vs. Thomaz Bellucci (BRA) – For many years, Monfils was more famous for his antics on the court than his winning. He seems to have turned that around and is playing great tennis. The crowd loves watching him play and he is definitely a showman, but he is hitting fewer errors and isn’t committing as many mistakes and the wins have been piling up. Bellucci is no push-over, and for many years he has been touted as one of the best young guys on the tour, but so far he hasn’t lived up to the billing. Monfils will be tested, but in the end he should pull it out. Monfils in 3 or 4 sets.

John Isner (USA) vs. David Nalbandian (ARG) – This match has all the makings for a barn-burner. Isner comes in playing good tennis and Nalbandian is always a difficult out. He was beating Jarkko Nieminen pretty handily in the first round when Nieminen retired, so Nalbandian was able to get some rest. Nalbandian isn’t going to make many mistakes so Isner is going to have to pick his spots to attack. He needs to serve well and win as many easy points their as possible, but the longer this match goes the more it is going to swing to Nalbandian. I like Isner here in 4 sets, but watch out this could be an upset!

Tommy Haas (GER) vs. Rafael Nadal (ESP) – I am thrilled to see Tommy back and playing good tennis again. He has been training with me for so long that I consider him part of my family. Throughout his whole career it’s seemed as if he is cursed with injuries, but he comes back more resilient each time. He has one of the greatest one-handed backhands you will ever see, a killer forehand and a fantastic slice. Nadal is going to do what he does to Federer’s one-handed backhand. He is going to hit heavy top-spin forehands to it and try to break it down. Tommy cannot get into long rallies with Nadal, especially cross-court rallies to Nadal’s forehand this will only spell trouble. If Nadal is able to jump out to a fast start, then watch out because once he gets rolling he is almost impossible to stop. I have to give the edge here to Nadal, but this will be a fun match. Nadal in 4 sets.

Women

Caroline Wozniacki (DEN) vs. Anna Tatishvili (GEO) – This match is all about Wozniacki. She has the goods to win it and probably will, but I will be watching to see how she plays. Everyone is waiting for her to claim her first major title and until she does their will always be chatter. I want to see her play more aggressive. She needs to get a high percentage of her first serves in and she cannot start pushing her second serve because her opponent will jump all over that. I would also like to see her go for her forehand when she has the opportunity and not play as defensive. I look for Wozniacki to advance but she is going to have to play better tennis if she wants to capture this title. Wozniacki in 2 sets.

Jelena Jankovic (SRB) vs. Kai-Chen Chang (TPE) – Jankovic looked great in her first round win over Laura Robson as she controlled the points from the first ball. Now, she gets a qualifier in Chang and should be able to do the same. Jankovic has tested about every coach imaginable, but it all really boils down to her own mentality. She has the tools to compete with the best and she is super athletic, she just needs to focus mentally. Jankovic in 2 sets.

Sabine Lisicki (GER) vs. Shahar Peer (ISR) – Lisicki, who trains at the IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy, needed three sets to win her first round match and now she faces an even more difficult opponent in Shahar Peer. Lisicki’s game is to hit the crud out of the ball from anywhere on the court. She has a big-time serve and her groundstrokes are some of the very best. Her issue is that sometimes she presses a little and overhits, so if she can avoid that she should be in good shape. Lisicki should be able to win this match, but Peer will not go down without a challenge. She is very competitive and will make Lisicki work for every point. As long as Lisicki stays within herself and can avoid injury she should be just fine. Lisicki in 3 sets.

Svetlana Kuznetsova (RUS) vs. Sloane Stephens (USA) – You don’t hear much chatter about Kuznetsova these days and if you are on the women’s side that should make you nervous. She is always dangerous and she looks like she is in excellent shape right now. She has a great foundation and generally makes little to no errors on the court. Stephens is a young American who has all the physical gifts to be a top player. Her biggest weakness is her mental game. She looked much better at the 2011 US Open, and if she can play like that consistently she will be in good shape. At this point, I don’t think she has enough to beat Kuznetsova right now, but that day may come very soon. Kuznetsova in 2 or 3 sets.

Roger Federer (SUI) vs. Marin Cilic (CRO)

This is the first real test for Federer, as Cilic comes into this match playng great tennis and he should be full of confidence. I said before the tournament that I liked Federer’s chances of winning this event, and he has done nothing so far to change my opinion.

Cilic has beaten two of the best up-and-comers in the world in Ryan Harrison and Bernard Tomic and both times I have picked him to lose! Well, I guess I am going to try my luck again with him!

Match-Up:

Federer is 2-0 against Cilic, which includes a win over him earlier this year in Monte Carlo. Cilic has played some unbelievable tennis in the first two rounds and he will have to play even better to knock off Federer. His groundstrokes are excellent, he has a sonic serve and for a big boy he moves really well. He thrives off of pace, and that is where I think Federer can make an impact. Federer has the ability to change the pace and play with more variety than Harrison or Tomic did. He also has the big serve to get out of tough positions and he isn’t making very many mistakes right now. I think Cilic can win a set and keep it interesting, but I have to pick Federer to advance.

Nick’s Pick – Federer in 4 sets

Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. Nikolay Davydenko (RUS)

Djokovic almost pulled off the rare feat of triple-bageling and opponent in the second round as he beat Carlos Berlocq 6-0, 6-0, 6-2. What can I say about Djokovic that hasn’t been said before this year? The man is playing some of the best tennis in the history of the game and there appears to be no end in sight!

Davydenko has been as high as #3 in the world, but injuries and age have started to catch up to him. He still has some good tennis left in him though as he beat Nadal earlier this year and almost won Munich.

Match-Up:

Djokovic is 4-2 against Davyenko and the two just met in Canada were Djokovic won 7-5, 6-1. A few years ago this match would been a quarterfinal of semifinal, but that isn’t the case anymore. I watched Davydenko’s whole match against Potito Starace in the second round and he still moves well, has the solid groundstrokes and can get free points off his serve. Starace stood well behind the baseline though which gave Davydenko more time to recover before each shot. That is definitely not going to happen in this match. Djokovic loves to catch the ball early, on the rise, and keep his opponents off-balance. As I have said recently, right now, Djokovic is playing at a level that we have never seen in the sport. He has no weakness in any part of his game and he can place the ball anywhere he wants. I look for Djokovic to continue his amazing 2011 with a straight-set victory here.

Nick’s Pick – Djokovic in 3 sets

Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. David Nalbandian (ARG)

After a rather long (for his standards) first round match, Nadal was only out on the court for a little over an hour in his second round win over Nicolas Mahut. After winning the first two sets, the Frenchman Mahut was forced to retire with an abdominal injury. A solid win for Nadal and that should give him some more confidence.

Nalbandian knocked off Ivan Ljubicic in four sets to reach the third round of the US Open for the second straight year. Nalbandian has been hampered by injuries over the last few years, but when he was healthy he was definitely a threat to go deep into every tournament.

Match-Up:

This is the fifth career meting between these two and they have split their previous four. Their last battle came in the Round of 32 in Miami in 2010 and Nadal won that in three sets. Nalbandian certainly isn’t the player he was a few years ago. He’s ranked #76 in the world and injuries have slowed him down. He has all the talent in the world, but his physical conditioning has never been where it could have. There is no way that I think he has enough in the tank to stand in and take the constant pounding of Nadal’s groundstrokes. Nadal is going to make Nalbandian hit difficult winners and that is not a recipe for success for the Argentine. Could Nalbadian win a set? Sure! But I just don’t see any way he wins this match.

Nick’s Pick – Nadal in 3 sets

Feliciano Lopez (ESP) vs. Andy Murray (GBR)

It was a tale of two different Andy Murray’s in his five-set thrilling victory over Robin Haase. The first two sets he looked listless and out of energy and then he turned it on in the third set winning the next two easily. The fifth set was strange though as Murray was running away with it, Haase starting hitting winners again and all of a sudden he had ourselves one heck of a match. In the end though, Murray was just too much. A difficult win, but one that I think will help him moving forward.

Lopez hasn’t really faced a big challenge yet in his two matches, but that is about to change. He’s been to the fourth round at the US Open twice before (2007 ad 2010), but never further.

Match-Up:

Murray is 5-0 against Lopez and beat him earlier this year in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in straight sets. Lopez has the big lefty serve as well as the powerful forehand. His movement is solid, but the difference here will be Murray’s return of serve. He has one of, if not, the best return of serve in the game and he is able to put pressure on his opponents at all times. Once the ball is in play, Murray should have the advantage. Now, if he comes out and plays like he did in the first two sets against Haase, Lopez will jump all over him. I don’t think Murray will let that happen again though and I look for him to advance in three tough sets or maybe four sets.

Nick’s Pick – Murray in 4 sets

Andy Murray (GBR) vs. Ivan Ljubicic (CZE)

Murray dropped the first set in his first match but has looked very good since. The crowd has been cheering him on big time and that should help him in this match. He is 3-3 against Ljubicic, but they have never played on grass before. Ljubicic already has two good wins over Marin Cilic and Sergiy Stakhovsky and he is playing great tennis.

Ljubicic has a big serve, but once the ball is in play the points should favor Murray. Ljubicic needs to win quick points and take his chances on Murray’s serve. Although, Murray has improved his serve recently, it still isn’t as big as Ljubicic’s is. The difference here is that Murray has a great return of serve and he should be able to break Ljubicic at the right times. I like Murray to advance, but this could definitely go four sets.

Nick’s Pick – Murray in 4 sets

Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG) vs. Gilles Simon (FRA)

These two have met twice before with each winning one match. The last time they met was at the 2008 US Open which Del Potro won in five sets. Both men have had to fight through injuries over the last few years, but when they are healthy they are both excellent tennis players. Simon has a great backhand, very good serve and moves around the court extremely well. He has the goods to push anyone back behind the baseline and he is usually pretty consistent with his groundstrokes.

With every match, Del Potro seems to be getting a little more comfortable and that is bad news for the rest of the field. He has already won a Grand Slam title and is a real threat to win every time he takes the court. He has a big serve, great groundies, and his movement is very good for a big guy. He has an incredible ability to come in and take the ball above his shoulder and hit winners. This will usually catch his opponents out of position and enable him to win easy points. I think this match will go four sets and I have to give a slight edge to Del Potro because he has a little more firepower.

Nick’s Pick – Del Potro in 4 sets

Roger Federer (SUI) vs. David Nalbandian (ARG)

Nalbandian has had good success (compared to others) against Federer in the past, sporting an 8-10 record. Surprisingly, this will be their first meeting on grass and their first since 2008. Nalbandian has never been the guy that is in the absolute best shape, but at the same time, he moves well, has excelllent groundies and is a good competitor. He has the game to hang in there with Federer, but I don’t think he can beat him on grass in a best-of-five.

Federer is playing at a very high level right now and this will be his first real test. I could see him dropping a set to Nalbandian or having one tight set and winning in three. Right now, his serve and his forehand are two huge weapons and Nalbandian just doesn’t have the firepower to beat Federer.

Nick’s Pick – Federer in 4 sets

Bernard Tomic (AUS) vs. Robin Soderling (SWE)

Tomic survived a five-setter against Igor Andreev to advance to the third round of a Grand Slam for the second time in his career. He is definitely one of the best up-and-comers out there and he has the talent to be a top player in the future. His style of play is a bit unorthodox and is usually takes his opponents a bit to adjust. He moves well despite looking like he is sleeping out there and his groundstrokes from both sides are excellent. This is his first match against Soderling and it will be interesting to see how he handles the big stage.

Speaking of Soderling, he also won a five setter in his last match, beating Hewitt to reach the third round. He proved how mentally tough he is and the physical toll his game takes on his opponents. Against Tomic, he should be able to control the points with his booming serve and superb forehand/backhand. This match could go four sets if it takes Soderling a bit to adjust to Tomic, but he should be able to advance.

Nick’s Pick – Soderling in 4 sets

Here are some notes and observations from Day 2 of the Australian Open..

Kimiko Date-Krumm vs. Radwanska

At the age of 40, Date-Krumm moves like a teenager. She has a very simple game plan – she stays close to the baseline and is very consistent with her deep groundstrokes and then she will add in an angle or drop shot.

Date-Krumm is an inspiration to anybody who refuses to throw up the white flag. She is a spoiler and a girl to watch. This veteran loves to play.

At 4-1 down in the 3rd set, Radwanska took a 15 minutes injury timeout. Date-Krumm was on a roll, but when they restarted she lost not only her serve, but lost five straight points.

The score went to 4-4, but Date-Krumm broke serve and went up 5-4 but was broken, so the score was 5-5. Radwanska goes up 6-5, then wins 7-5. Doesn’t seem fair to have a 13-15 minute injury break at this point in the match and it really swung things in her favor.

It will be very interesting to see how the Radwanska injury is in her next match.

Rafael Nadal

You guessed it. The man has come out with a new forehand called “The Helicopter Blade.” I suggest you be careful if you try it…the blade could very well hit you in the head!

David Nalbandian

He uses the top left hand on his two-handed backhand as well as any player in the game. By doing this he can hold off a split second longer before making contact. This makes it so hard for the opponent to know where the ball is going. His two-handed backhand down the line is a devastating shot.

Lleyton Hewitt

He is still a contender, but he is a wee bit slower returning the wide forehand. His two-handed backhand lob is just a beautiful finesse shot.

Once he starts hitting too many cross court backhands, it begins to hurt him – he must hit more backhands down the line. Getting into cross court backhand rallies will not work against a player like Nalbandian. Hewitt cannot play cross court patterns against a player like Nalbandian.

Note: Hitting down the line from behind the baseline off a slice is not a good idea, because Nalbandian hits the ball very flat. Guys like Nadal generate much more spin on low balls. Hewitt prefers to hit flatter, which in a match vs. Nalbandian at times will hurt especially when you hit from low to high.

Bernard Tomic

A few years ago Tomic spent a considerable amount of time at the IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy. Right now he is about 6’5” and has so many of the tools needed to be a top-ten player. His two-handed backhand is off the wall, his serve is impressive as well as his confidence. Look out for him in the next year or two.

A few more notes…

Vera Zvonareva is one heck of a player who trains at the Academy with her coach several times per year. I really like Vera and she is my kind of person who trains with the same tenacity whether it is in a practice session or the Grand Slam.

The courts at the Aussie Open are far different then Rebound Ace were. They are much more granular and the surface takes a heavy toll on the balls after 3 or 4 games. They start out smooth and very fast, but after three 3 or 4 games they fluff up and the tempo changes makes for longer rallies because the player can run down more balls.

Gael Monfils (FRA) vs. Frederico Gil (POR)

Monfils came back from two sets down for the first time in his career in the opening round to beat Thiemo De Bakker 6-7(5), 2-6, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1. Winning a match like this at a Grand Slam should give him a ton of confidence heading into the second round and I am looking for him to bounce back against Gil (who needed five sets as well to beat Pablo Cuevas 9-7 in the fifth).

These two met at a Challenger back in 2008 and Monfils won that in three sets. Often times, Monfils plays way too much defense and relies on his fitness and athleticism to win matches. I would like to see him take it to his opponent’s more and not rely so much on his opponent to make a mistake. He has also got to play smarter tennis and put his opponent’s away when he has the chance. I believe the first-round was a wake-up call for Monfils and I look for him to get by Gil in three or four sets.

Nick’s Pick – Monfils in 3 or 4 sets

Tomas Berdych (CZE) vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER)

Berdych dispensed Italian qualifier Marco Crugnola in three sets and lost six total games. He has never been past the fourth round in Australia and I think if he didn’t get to at least the quarters this year he would be disappointed, especially after reaching the finals of Wimbledon and the semis of the French Open in 2010.

Kohlschreiber comes into the tournament ranked #35 in the world and he has had success here in the past as he knocked off Andy Roddick back in 2008 in the third round and then challenged Nadal here last year. He came back from the brink in the first round, winning in five sets (he dropped the first two sets) over Tobias Kamke.

Berdych is 4-1 against Kohlschreiber, but the last time they faced (2009 Canada), Kohlschreiber won in three sets. Both of these guys can really strike the ball. Kohlschreiber has a big serve and a monster forehand and he isn’t afraid or timid. He is a dangerous opponent and is someone that Berdych needs to take very seriously. I have to give the edge to Berdych, but don’t be surprised to see Kohlschreiber push him to four sets here.

Nick’s Pick – Berdych in 4 sets

Keep an eye on the Federer/Simon match. Simon is 2-0 against Federer, but the two haven’t played since 2008. I am confident Federer will win, but this could be a great match. Simon has all the weapons, but has been injured off and on for the last couple of years. I am interested to see how Federer handles Simon.

John Isner (USA) vs. Radek Stepanek (CZE)

Isner is one of the few American men left in the draw after the opening round and he faces a very tough opponent in Radek Stepanek in the second round. The two have faced one before, back in 2008, and Stepanek won that in straight sets. Isner is a much different player than he was back then and I feel he has the necessary tools to win this match.

Isner cannot get into long rallies with Stepanek. He needs to serve well and win quick, easy points. He also needs to serve and volley a little, which Stepanek will do constantly throughout this match. Stepanek is going to approach the net every chance he gets and he will never relent. I don’t see this match ending in straight sets, but I look for Isner to pull it out in the end.

Nick’s Pick – Isner in 4 or 5 sets

Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. Ryan Sweeting (USA)

Nadal was up 11-0 when Marcos Daniel retired in the second set. Nadal has come out with a new forehand: “The Helicopter Blade” and it is a difficult shot to hit. This guy just keeps getting better and better and I am not sure if anyone can stop him from winning his fourth straight Grand Slam title.

Sweeting is into the second round of a Grand Slam for the first time since the 2006 US Open and he is certainly facing a huge uphill battle against Nadal. Sweeting hits the ball well from both sides, but he is going to have to try and approach the net as much as possible and put pressure on Nadal. I just can’t find any way Nadal will lose this match. He has too much of everything for Sweeting and should advance in straight sets.

Nick’s Pick – Nadal in 3 sets

On the top half of the draw, keep your eyes on these matches as well…

Del Potro vs. Baghdatis – How will Del Potro feel after playing in the first round? Can Baghdatis get the crowd on his side and use that momentum to win this match? If I had to pick, I would think Del Potro would advance, but with the injury still out there, who knows. This match is going to be fun to watch.

Nalbandian vs. Berankis – Berankis isn’t a big guy, but he packs a huge punch. He serves big, has monster groundstrokes and isn’t afraid of anyone. He played well in the opening round, but gets a tougher opponent in the second. Nalbandian is coming off of a long, emotional five-set win over Hewitt and that will definitely take a toll on his body. I am sure he is praying for a rain delay or heat delay or any kind of delay so he can get some rest. I am picking the upset in this match and I think Berankis will win it!

As I was writing these picks, Tommy Haas was practicing nearby so I asked him to come over and give his thoughts. So, for the first round these are a combination of my picks with some advice from Tommy!

Andy Murray (GBR) vs. Karol Beck (ITA)

Murray reached the finals here last year before falling to Federer in straight sets. Can he repeat that performance and maybe win his first Grand Slam? All of England would love that!

Beck is a solid player, but lacks a bit of stamina which isn’t good when playing Murray. He has a good forehand, but no weapons to push Murray around the court. Murray will drive Beck nuts in this match and should move on without much trouble.

Nick’s Pick – Murray in 3 sets

David Nalbandian (ARG) vs. Lleyton Hewitt (AUS)

This is clearly the match of the first round, especially with Hewitt playing in front of his home crowd. Nalbandian is playing well, but you can never be too sure how fit or healthy he is. Hewitt hasn’t played since September of last year and is coming back from an injury so his health is in question as well.

These two have some history…Hewitt is 3-2 against Nalbandian and beat him in the quarterfinals of the Australian Open back in 2005 10-8 in the fifth set! I have to give a slight edge to Nalbandian because of Hewitt’s health, but if the Aussie crowd can get behind him and will him to victory. I can’t wait to watch this one!!

Nick’s Pick – Nalbandian in 4 or 5 sets

Roger Federer (SUI) vs. Lukas Lacko (SVK)

Federer could be in for a couple of difficult matches here in the first two rounds. Lacko is a zany guy who isn’t afraid to come in to the net and has a very good forehand. If/when Federer gets by him, he has to play Gilles Simon in the second round and he playing very well also. This is the first time in a long time that Federer could get seriously tested in the opening couple of rounds. On the other hand, Federer could play like Federer and just blow throw these guys, demonstrating what has made him the best of all time. Can’t wait!

Nick’s Pick – Federer in 3 tough sets

Kei Nishikori (JPN) vs. Fabio Fognini (ITA)

This is the first career meeting between the 21-year old Nishikori and the 23-year old Fognini. Nishikori made a name for himself a couple of years ago when he won a title in surprise fashion. He has been injured off and on and is now working with Brad Gilbert and IMG Bollettieri Tennis coach, Dante Bottini. He is feeling good and when he is on, he can beat the best. He just took down Marin Cilic and Alejandro Falls in Chennai and demonstrated why he can be such a threat.

Fognini isn’t going to hurt Nishikori, but he can run all day. Nishikori has to be patient and pretend like he is playing on clay. Just wait for his chances and then strike when he has the opportunity. He cannot get over-aggressive and has to remain focused. I look for Nishikori to win, but this will not be a short match.

Nick’s Pick – Nishikori in 4 sets

Playing at her home Academy in front of a standing-room only crowd, 11-year-old Mariya Shishkina turned any pre-match jitters into a dominant preview of her potential as a tennis player.

Shishkina, an IMG Bollettieri Tennis Academy student, on Friday took the U-12 girls title in the Eddie Herr International Junior Tennis Championships — the world’s largest junior tournament held at one location.

Shishkina quickly dispatched Alicia Black 6-1, 6-0 to complete her roll through the U-12 bracket for her first major tournament win. Shishkina never dropped a set in the tournament.

Originally from Kazakhstan, Shishkina is now a U.S. citizen and one of the top up-and-coming juniors in the world.

Past winners of the Eddie Herr include notable names like Jelena Jankovic, Anna Kournikova, David Nalbandian, Marcelo Rios, Andy Roddick and Maria Sharapova. Find more info, including brackets and the full list of past winners, at www.eddieherr.com.

Check out Mariya talking about her title minutes after the match ended:

Once again, Nick’s Picks along with Tennis Week will bring you in-depth coverage of the Australian Open. Check back everyday for insight leading up to the Open and then throughout.

David Nalbandian (ARG) vs. Yen-Hsun Lu (TPE)

Nalbandian picked up a four-set win over Marc Gicquel of France in the opening round. He has already captured a title in 2009, winning in Sydney just last week. He has been to the quarters here three times and the semis once.

Lu comes into the tournament ranked a career high of #61 in the world and has reached the second round of the Aussie Open for only the second time in five attempts. He is best known for his upset over Andy Murray in the first round of the Olympics last year, so you know the kid can play.

The Match-Up:

Nalbandian is 1-0 against in his career, with that win coming back in 2004 in Beijing. Nalbandian is not a guy who is going to come out and surprise you. He is extremely solid from the baseline, doesn’t make many mistakes, and will keep Lu pinned back on his heels with deep groundstrokes. Nalbandian returns the serve well and his serve itself is underrated. Lu is going to have to force the issue a bit in this match and try to keep Nalbandian off balance, which is not an easy thing to do. I look for Nalbandian to pull through.

Nick’s Pick – Nalbandian in 3 or 4 sets

Marin Cilic (CRO) vs. Janko Tipsarevic (SRB)

Cilic is one the top guys to watch over the next couple of years. He is only 20-years old and is already ranked #20 in the world. He came into the Aussie Open with a perfect 5-0 record on the year and a title in Chennai already under his belt.

Tipsarevic, aka “Tipsy”, played one of the great matches of the 2008 Aussie Open when he took Federer to five sets before falling 10-8 in the fifth. This is already his third tournament of the young season and he reached the quarters in Chennai a couple of weeks ago.

The Match-Up:

Cilic is 1-0 against Tipsarevic, with that win coming just a couple of weeks ago in Chennai. That match went three sets, with Tipsarevic winning the second set 6-0 and Cilic winning the third 6-4. Tipsarevic is a streaky player. One day he takes Federer to five sets and the next he is losing to Albert Montanes 6-2, 6-1. He needed five sets to win his first match, and that may have an affect on his energy level in this match.

Cilic plays a big game from both sides and has a great serve. His style of play translates well onto this court and he seems to thrive on the big stage. Tipsarevic has the ability to frustrate the best guys and I don’t think this is going to be an easy win for Cilic. I give the edge to the Croat, but this could go long.

Nick’s Pick – Cilic in 4, maybe 5 sets

Rafael Nadal (ESP) vs. Roko Karanusic (CRO)

Nadal is very different, he is truly one of a kind. The entire tennis world is lucky that we get to witness a player such as him right now. His engine never stops running and that is what makes him so special.

Karanusic comes into the Aussie Open ranked #92 in the world. His best result in a Grand Slam came at last year’ US Open where he reached the second round before falling to Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy student Kei Nishikori.

The Match-Up:

This is the first career meeting between Nadal and Karanusic. Nadal plays a style that very few others can match. He beats you up and then throws in a few more punches just for good measure. I am sure his team tells him to try and cut down long points by using a little less spin on his groundstrokes and also taking advantage of his lefty serve (especially out wide to the ad side). Karanusic cannot trade blows with the killer, he should talk himself into being a totally different play and do things he through would be impossible. If Nadal continues to play like he did against Rochus, this could be quick.

Nick’s Pick – Nadal in 3 sets

Andy Murray (GBR) vs. Marcel Granollers (ESP)

Murray was not tested in the first round because Pavel retired in the second set. Murray is the talk of the world, especially among the British fans and news-media, and for good reason. He has never had a better chance than now at winning a Grand Slam.

Granollers picked up a four-set victory over Teimuraz Gabashvili in the first round. He is currently ranked #51 in the world and just reached the semis in Chennai a couple of weeks ago.

The Match-Up:

Murray is 1-0 against Granollers, with that win coming a couple of years ago on clay in Barcelona. More than likely, Murray is going to win this match, but we must be careful not to overreact to all the publicity he is receiving. Granollers cannot keep the ball in play and expect Mr. Murray to make errors. He must take chances, say a few prayers, and pray for some kind of heat phenomenon. Look for Murray to continue his winning ways.

Nick’s Pick – Murray in 3 sets

Other matches of interest:

Here are some of the other matches that I will be keeping my eye on during the first round.

Andy Roddick (USA) vs. Xavier Malisse (BEL) – After qualifying for the tournament, NBTA alum, Xavier Malisse, won his opening round match against Michael Llodra. Everyone agree that Malisse has the type of game that could keep Roddick pinned back. Malisse has magnificent footwork and excellent techniques; he just needs to stay focused. If he can, which I think he will, he could put a scare in Roddick. I do give Roddick the advantage though because of Malisse’s recent lack of match-play. This should be a good one.

Fabrice Santoro (FRA) vs. Philipp Kohlschreiber (GER) – I still am having a hard time coming to grips with the fact that Santoro is going to retire. He is the kind of the guy that is great for the tour, because he plays such a different game. If you compare apples to apples, Kohlschreiber definitely has the bigger guns in this match. If you look at the mental aspect and the knowledge of the game, Santoro has the edge. I urge everyone to watch the magician at work here, as this will be a great match.

Novak Djokovic (SRB) vs. Jeremy Chardy (FRA) - Everyone is making a big deal about Djokovic’s racket change. He needs to accept the fact that he made the switch and needs to have complete confidence in his new tool. He was a little shaky early on in his first match with his forehand, but seemed to settle in as the match progressed. He can’t do that against Chardy, who is very talented. If you don’t know about Chardy, you will soon. He is currently #68 in the world and at 21-years old has a very bright future. He will go Djokovic a heck of a match, but in the end the Djoker will get the last laugh.

Bernard Tomic (AUS) vs. Gilles Muller (LUX) – Both of these guys are coming off of great wins. Tomic, the 16-year old Aussie, won his first Grand Slam main draw match, and Muller won a dramatic 16-14 five setter over Feliciano Lopez. No matter what anybody says it takes longer than one day to recover from a battle like Muller went through. He is a lefty with a good forehand, big serve, and not too many weaknesses. Tomic has excellent groundstrokes for a young kid, but to beat Muller he must gamble and take advantage of any defensive balls.

Gael Monfils (FRA) vs. Stefan Koubek (AUT) – Koubek is a fighter and can play on a very high level if he keeps his focus in line. Monfils must not be a dare-devil, and conserve his energy especially with the temperatures being so high. The Aussie fans really take to the character of Gael and this will help him throughout the tournament.

Ivan Ljubicic (CRO) vs. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA) – This is a must-see match. The big serving Ljubicic had to play a tough five setter, while Tsonga was nice to his opponent, letting Juan Monaco get out of the heat relatively quickly (losing only eight games).

Ivo Karlovic (CRO) vs. Mario Ancic (CRO) – I am sure these two Croats know each other very well. Karlovic must have a huge serving day, which includes using a variety of serves rather that just big booming ones. Karlovic must also be aggressive onm his returns, especially from the backhand side. He cannot only slice and chip. Ancic is solid in all areas; the only question mark is his physical health. He has great techniques and will present a great challenge for Karlovic. Not too many break of serves in this one…

Once again, Nick’s Picks along with Tennis Week will bring you in-depth coverage of the Australian Open. Check back everyday for insight leading up to the Open and then throughout.

It was great to see Taylor Dent back on the tennis court at the Aussie Open!

Day 1 one of the Aussie Open is in the books, and it was a record-breaking day for the crowds as there were over 46,000 people there during they day and another 15,000 at night. WOW! It was also a great start if you were a seeded player. The bottom half of the men’s draw was in action on Day 1, and that included defending champion Novak Djokovic, three-time champion Roger Federer, and American Andy Roddick. All three of those guys won their matches without dropping a set, as did every other seeded man on the bottom half except for Feliciano Lopez (he lostto Gilles Muller 16-14 in the fifth set, it was an incredible match).

I was very interested to watch the Federer match to see how he looked in his opener. First thing I have to say is that if a line judge misses three or more calls of balls that are out by 16-18 inches, you have to find out if that person needs glasses!!! Watching Federer just reminded me again how great he is. Without a doubt, he is the best all-around player on the tour. His speed and anticipation are off the wall, and he can with any shot in the book. Brad Gilbert made a comment during the match that I agree with. He said that Federer’s return of serve is not as offensive as it was a couple of years ago, this may hurt him down the line. Federer is definitely not the biggest server on tour, but he is certainly one of the smartest and can come up with the ace when needed. Also, many people don’t realize how much action and how heavy Federer’s second serve is. If Seppi could have put pressure on Federer’s second serve then this match would have been much closer. Speaking of Seppi, he is a very good player and has a possibility to become the first Italian to be ranked in the top-20 in 30 years (since Corrado Barazzutti in 1978)! Seppi had chances to get even in this match, but he couldn’t convert on his break chances because he didn’t play aggressive enough. He waited for Federer to make mistakes, and you can’t do that when you play against this guy. It was a very solid start for Federer, and I will be watching him closely throughout the rest of the tournament.

It was not a good start for the American men. There were nine in action and only three (Roddick, Fish, and Delic) won. Among the losers were two of our better young guys, Sam Querrey and John Isner. Delic faced another American, Taylor Dent, who was playing in his first Grand Slam since the 2006 Aussie Open. The match went five set, with Delic winning 6-4 in the fifth. After three back operations doctors said Dent had a 20% chance of getting back on the court, but he didn’t let that deter him. He followed his heart and didn’t let anything deter him. He truly is an inspiration and even the other guys like Roddick were happy see him back out there. “From the sounds of it, for a while, you didn’t think he was going to come back with how severe his injuries were,” Roddick said. “So it’s a testament to him wanting to get back.” Despite the loss, I am sure Dent was thrilled to be back out there and we are all rooting him on! Congrats to Taylor and we look forward to seeing him back at the Academy training soon.

A couple of other notes on the men…

What a match between Muller and Lopez. There are two things you look for when a match goes long like this. The first is tired legs (which Lopez had) and the second is hitting low percentage shots (too many from Lopez). Those were the big deciding factors in this match. I also want to commend the umpire of this match for using his head wisely and allowing the guys to take more time between points and during breaks. Everyone was battling temperatures in the 100′s, and this can really take a toll on your body.

Watch out for Nalbandian. He looked good and could give the top guys fits. He is one of those players that if he is hot, he is capable of anything.

Nice to see Santoro and Xavier Malisse get wins. Santoro defeated JC Ferrero and X (after qualifying) beat Michael Llodra. Next up for Santoro is Philipp Kohlschreiber and X will take on Roddick.

A lot of people have asked me about Andy Murray’s chances, you can read my thoughts here from The Indepedent newspaper in London and what makes him so difficult to beat is his movement and anticipation. It’s as if his opponent is playing on a much bigger court than he is, and because of this his opponent’s get impatient and over-hit. That is what makes Murray so dangerous.

On the women’s side, there were no big upsets. Both Jankovic and Ivanovic won their openers, as did Safina, Zvonareva, Petrova, Wozniacki and Cornet. I really think it is going to be difficult for Ivanovic to win this tournament if she continues to serve like she did in her opening match. Her toss is all over the place and is causing her to hit to the opponent’s forehand side almost 100% of the time. I suggest she relaxes her arm a bit, because right now it is as stiff as a board. If she gets that toss under control, her chances of winning go up dramatically. Jankovic played fantastic tennis, and it look as though the hard-work she put in during the off-season is really paying off. The one thing you notice right now about the women’s tour is that they really miss Sharapova and Henin. What’s missing is the feistyness and competitiveness of Sharapova and the variety from Henin. Neither of those girls can be replaced…

Overall it was a fantastic Day 1, and I am really looking forward to Day 2!

We begin today with the breakdown of the Top 10 Men and the Players to Watch. Check back everyday for insight leading up to the Open and then throughout.

Top 10 Seeds

Can Andy Murray win his first Grand Slam down under?

Rafael Nadal (ESP)
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 188 lbs.
D.O.B: 06/03/1986
Turned Pro: 2001
Current Ranking: 1
Plays: Left-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: Monte Carlo, Barcelona, Hamburg, Roland Garros, Queen’s Club, Wimbledon, Canada, and the Olympics
2008 Australian Open: Semifinals

Nick’s Thoughts:

Rafael Nadal no longer has to play second fiddle to anyone. His record in 2008 clearly shows what he can do. His brand of tennis demands both his body and mind give 100% (and more) every time he hits a ball. No matter what he does off the court with his physical trainer, it doesn’t guarantee that he will not wear down!

The surface at the Aussie Open fits well into his game. He was a semifinalist last year and I am sure he will be a contender again this year. Nadal needs to take one match at a time and after each match he should plan his next one very carefully and save his energy. I would rather see him do that than put in heavy practice time because it will be easier on his body. I would never, never bet against the “Iron Man.” He is a credit to the game on and off the court, and will be a contender to win this title.

Roger Federer (SUI)
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 177 lbs.
D.O.B: 08/08/1981
Turned Pro: 1998
Current Ranking: 2
Plays: Right-handed (one-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: Estoril, Halle, US Open, and Basel
2008 Australian Open: Semifinals

Nick’s Thoughts:

There isn’t a day that goes by that I am not asked what has happened to Roger Federer. I cannot answer this per se, but I can tell you this: Roger is one of the very best to have played the game and his career is far from over. I am sure he is going to add a few more Grand Slam titles to his trophy case!

Federer is looking to start the year with a bang, and winning the Aussie Open would certainly qualify as such. If he wins this, the players will not be so eager to face him as they are now!

Novak Djokovic (SRB)
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 176 lbs.
D.O.B: 05/22/1987
Turned Pro: 2003
Current Ranking: 3
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: Australian Open, Indian Wells, Rome, and the Masters Cup
2008 Australian Open: Champion

Nick’s Thoughts:

Novak, this is the deal: You are the defending champion!!! In 2008, things were up and down and he has already begun 2009 with a loss in the first round at Brisbane. If you look at his game there aren’t many weaknesses, but the unknown is what happens inside his head.

Having Djokovic on the tour is a great thing for the fans, but he needs to accept the time playing rules and stay out of trouble for bouncing that ball! The first week of the Aussie Open will be my concern for him. He must come prepared for the battle and be ready to play as soon as he steps on the court. I think he could get into trouble, but I seem him staying around until week number two.

Andy Murray (GBR)
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 175 lbs.
D.O.B.: 05/15/1987
Turned Pro: 2005
Current Ranking: 4
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: Doha, Marseille, Cincinnati, Madrid, and St. Petersburg
2008 Australian Open: 1st Round

Nick’s Thoughts:

Is there anybody hotter on tour than Andy Murray? He beat Federer and Nadal at an exhibition to start the year, and then beat Federer and Andy Roddick in Doha to capture the title. He reached his first career Grand Slam final at the US open, and I really feel this is the year that he wins a Grand Slam. For the last three years I have touted Murray as one of the best players on the tour, and he is now showing everyone how good he is and will be. After Federer, Murray would be my pick to win this tournament. He is just too good to lose early again like he did in 2008.

Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (FRA)
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 200 lbs.
D.O.B.: 04/17/1985
Turned Pro: 2004
Current Ranking: 6
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: Bangkok and Paris
2008 Australian Open: Finalist

Nick’s Thoughts:

I love watching Tsonga play, and he will automatically get the Aussie fans on his side! His talents are undeniable and when you combine that with his ability to entertain you get one heck of a player. Last year was magical for Tsonga, and he is going to need to recapture some of that in 2009. He has a lot of points to defend here and cannot afford an early exit. Tsonga must also avoid the injury bug, as he missed pretty much the entire summer of 2008 due to injuries. If Tsonga is fully healthy, watch out!!

Gilles Simon (FRA)
Height: 5’11″
Weight: 152 lbs.
D.O.B.: 12/27/1984
Turned Pro: 2002
Current Ranking: 7
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: Casablanca, Indianapolis, and Bucharest
2008 Australian Open: 3rd Round

Nick’s Thoughts:

Simon was one of the breakthrough players of 2008. For the first time in his career he is seeded in the top five of a Grand Slam (because Davydenko is injured), and with that comes a whole net set of pressures. Simon has never been past the third round of any Grand Slam in his career, and he needs to get into the second week on a more consistent basis to prove that he is a top five player. He plays well on the hard courts, and I look for him to get to at least the fourth round.

Andy Roddick (USA)
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 195 lbs.
D.O.B: 08/30/1982
Turned Pro: 2000
Current Ranking: 8
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: San Jose, Dubai, and Beijing
2008 Australian Open: 3rd Round

Nick’s Thoughts:

Roddick has a new coach, Larry Stefanki, and that has already paid dividends. Stefanki is one of the best in the industry, and with him at his side he reached the finals at Doha last week. We know what Roddick’s serve and forehand can do, and with the help of Jimmy Connors and Patrick McEnroe Roddick has really shored up his backhand. It is strange to think that Roddick has never been to the finals of this tournament, but I wouldn’t count him out this year. He needs a good draw, and if he gets one he has what it takes to be around at the very end.

Juan Martin Del Potro (ARG)
Height: 6’6″
Weight: 182 lbs.
D.O.B: 09/23/1988
Turned Pro: 2005
Current Ranking: 9
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: Stuttgart, Kitzbuhel, Los Angeles, and Washington
2008 Australian Open: 2nd Round

Nick’s Thoughts:

Del Potro, like Simon, was one the big movers and shakers of 2008. He won four consecutive tournaments before the US Open and had a winning streak of 23 matches that helped propel him into the top 10. He has got the weapons and the talent to be a constant threat to win titles. Del Potro is still very young (only 20) and has a very bright future ahead of him. He’s never been past the second round down under, but this could be the year for him. I love Del Potro, but the question is: Does he have the physical stamina to win a Grand Slam? The engine ran out of gas at the US Open (and gas was pretty expensive back in September), and it was because he was overworked. If he can keep his energy up he is as good as anyone on the tour.

James Blake (USA)
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 183 lbs.
D.O.B: 12/28/1979
Turned Pro: 1999
Current Ranking: 10
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: None
2008 Australian Open: Quarterfinals

Nick’s Thoughts:

Blake has battled through many barriers, and now his age might be starting to catch up with him. He can play brilliantly on some points and then conk out on others! Blake is a fantastic guy and even when his career is over he will be successful in whatever he decides to do. Even though Blake is a top ten player, in my mind he is still a sleeper. If he gets into the second week he could be a guy that pulls off a big upset.

David Nalbandian (ARG)
Height: 5’11″
Weight: 175 lbs.
D.O.B: 01/01/1982
Turned Pro: 2000
Current Ranking: 11
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: Buenos Aires and Stockholm
2008 Australian Open: 3rd Round

Nick’s Thoughts:

Nalbandian is a three-time quarterfinalist and has also been to the semis once at the Australian Open, but in the last two years he has failed to get past the fourth round. Nalbandian has always had issues with his weight and fitness which is unfortunate because he is incredibly talented. David can never be written off, but he lacks the physical make-up to go all the way.

Others to Watch

Gael Monfils (FRA)
Height: 6’4″
Weight: 177 lbs.
D.O.B: 09/01/1986
Turned Pro: 2004
Current Ranking: 13
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: None
2008 Australian Open: Didn’t play

Nick’s Thoughts:

There is no one I like watching more than Monfils. He slides, dives, spins, and is as entertaining as it gets on the tennis court. In fact, he should be in the Cirque du Soleil show! Having said that, Monfils has never been able to put it all together throughout an entire Grand Slam tournament. The closest he came was at last year’s French Open, where he reached the semis before losing to Roger Federer in four tough sets. This will be his fourth Aussie Open appearance, and he has never been past the third round. If he remains focused he is a threat to anyone.

Fernando Verdasco (ESP)
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 179 lbs.
D.O.B: 11/15/1983
Turned Pro: 2001
Current Ranking: 15
Plays: Left-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: Umag
2008 Australian Open: 2nd Round

Nick’s Thoughts:

Verdasco has one of, if not, the best forehands in the entire game. It is a deadly weapon that has helped him climb into the top 20. The Aussie is the only Grand Slam that Verdasco hasn’t been to the fourth round of and I think he might just change that this year. Why, you ask? Because I feel he has more confidence after playing in the Davis Cup finals at the end of last year. He just reached the finals at Brisbane, and has what it takes to compete with the big boys.

Marin Cilic (CRO)
Height: 6’6″
Weight: 180 lbs.
D.O.B: 09/28/1988
Turned Pro: 2005
Current Ranking: 20
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: New Haven
2008 Australian Open: 4th Round

Nick’s Thoughts:

Cilic is someone I have been high on for a while now. He is tall, moves well, and has big weapons from both sides. Last year he put the world on notice when he reached the fourth round as an 18-year old, and he has already won his first title of the year in Chennai. This kid is darn good. Watch out big boys!!

Radek Stepanek (CZE)
Height: 6’1″
Weight: 167 lbs.
D.O.B: 11/27/1978
Turned Pro: 1996
Current Ranking: 23
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: None
2008 Australian Open: 1st Round

Nick’s Thoughts:

Stepanek lives and trains at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy and his game is very predictable: He is steady, doesn’t want to over-hit, doesn’t have a huge weapon, and doesn’t have a big weakness. He forces the opponent to work overtime and you will hardly ever see him panic. Stepanek can go a long way (as he just did in Brisbane), but lacks the big guns to win the tournament.

P.S. He is a darn good volleyer!

Ivo Karlovic (CRO)
Height: 6’10″
Weight: 230 lbs.
D.O.B: 02/28/1979
Turned Pro: 2000
Current Ranking: 26
Plays: Right-handed (one-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: Nottingham
2008 Australian Open: 3rd Round

Nick’s Thoughts:

Karlovic spent a month at the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy during the off-season training and working on his game. He focused on his backhand and believe me, he is hitting it better than he has ever has before. If he can hit the backhand consistently and add his low biting slice the entire ball game changes for him. That would be the icing on the cake for Ivo, because he already has the lethal forehand, super serve, and excellent volleys. Karlovic cannot play defensive from his backhand side throughout his tournament. When he is playing his best he can beat anyone in the world at anytime.

P.S He is also a true gentleman!

Ernests Gulbis (LAT)
Height: 6’3″
Weight: 169 lbs.
D.O.B: 08/30/1988
Turned Pro: 2004
Current Ranking: 51
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: None
2008 Australian Open: 1st Round

Nick’s Thoughts:

Gulbis seems to pick up big wins, but he can never string them together to be a real threat to win a major tournament. Being ranked in the 50′s doesn’t allow him to get an easy draw, but a seeded player should be aware of what Gulbis is capable of doing. I think this may be the year that Gulbis asserts himself and he makes his move into the top 20. Look out for him in 2009!

Kei Nishikori (JPN)
Height: 5’10″
Weight: 150 lbs.
D.O.B: 12/29/1989
Turned Pro: 2007
Current Ranking: 59
Plays: Right-handed (two-handed backhand)
2008 Titles: Delray Beach
2008 Australian Open: Didn’t play

Nick’s Thoughts:

Not many players made more of a splash than the young Japanese star, Kei Nishikori. He has trained at the Academy since he was a boy and has an outstanding support team behind him. This will be Nishikori’s first Aussie Open and he has only played in two other Grand Slam events in his career. He reached the fourth round of the US Open in 2007, where he beat Juan Monaco and David Ferrer before falling to Juan Martin Del Potro.

For many young players that join the tour the first couple of years can be hard on their bodies. We have worked extremely hard with Kei in the offseason to get him stronger and fitter in preparation for 2009. At the same time, he is still very young and this is going to be one of the obstacles he will have top hurdle to make his way up the rankings. I have a feeling this young boy will bring a lot of excitement to the Tour, and I think he is primed for a big year and ready to become a top 20 player. The entire IMG/Bollettieri Tennis Academy will be rooting him on!
